34 degrees and raining

posted 2023 Feb by

Each morning, I usually get up at 5:30 and step off for a run.

A few days ago, I woke up and it was 34 degrees and raining.

When my alarm went off, I didn’t get up. Instead, I laid in bed and negotiated with myself:

“it won’t make a difference if you miss one day” (it does)

“you can do it later” (i won’t)

“you need more rest” (i didn't)

These were just excuses that my mind packaged as well-reasoned thoughts to try and make me feel less guilty about not doing what I know I should.

One thing to know about me is that I’m not someone who likes running when others are out, I prefer empty streets. Since I live in one of the largest cities in the world, this doesn't happen often.

So as I was laying there that morning, I had a thought that changed everything: because it was 34 degrees and raining, no one else would be out running so I would have the roads to myself.

Immediately, the icy rain turned from a negative into a positive and made me actually want to run. I got up, went for a run on empty streets, and loved it.

Always look for the positive. One thought can change everything.
